There are many types of needles used in embroidery and
an essential skill for any embroiderer is the ability to
select the appropriate needle(s) for a project. The
multitude of choices available in today's marketplace can
be intimidating even to the most experienced stitcher.

needles that will fit your needs.
Darners Needles - With great
length and long eyes, used for darning and mending with
heavy materials.
Crewel Needles - These needles
are commonly referred to as embroidery needles. They are
available in sizes 7, 8, and 10. Crewel needles are of
medium length with a long, oval eye and a sharp point.
Sharps Needles - Sharps are
general purpose needles. They are available in sizes 5,
6, and 10. Sharps are of medium length with a small,
round eye and a sharp point.
Chenille Needles - Chenille
needles are excellent for working with thicker threads
and silk ribbon. They are available in sizes 24 and 26.
Chenille needles are of medium length with a long, oval
eye and a sharp point.
Milliners Needles - Milliners
needles are also known as "Straw" needles. They are
available in size 3 to 9. Milliners needles are extra
long with a round eye and a sharp point. They eye of a
milliners needle is no wider than the shaft, allowing for
easy manipulation of bullion wraps.
Tapestry Needles - Tapestry
needles have one very distinctive characteristic--a
blunt, rounded tip. This special feature enables the
needle to slip easily between the warp and weft threads
without piercing or snagging the fabric. Tapestry needles
are available in sizes 20, 24, and 26. They are of medium
length with a long, oval eye and a blunt point.
Between Needles - Betweens are
also referred to as quilting needles. They are available
in sizes 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12. Quite short in length,
betweens have a small, round eye and a sharp point. Their
small size is very good for rendering short stitches
quickly and accurately.
